New timetable for the project “The municipality of Suðurland”

In the original schedule, work in focus groups were expected to take place between March 11th and April 14th, but due to restrictions on public gatherings, this work and consultation with residents has been postponed. Focus groups are scheduled to resume after the “Verslunarmannahelgi (first weekend of August) and the work is scheduled to be completed before September 21st. Public meetings are scheduled to take place in early October and the project team will submit its analysis and proposals to municipal councils by the end of October.

According to the previous plan, a proposal as to whether to open formal merger negotiations was to be submitted to the councils of the five participating municipalities in June, whose decisions will be made in November.

If the municipal councils decide to initiate formal merger discussions, it is estimated that a referendum on the merger can take place in the spring or fall of 2021. If the residents of the municipalities vote to confirm the merger, the new municipality will be established  in June 2022, following municipal elections.

The postponement therefore does not affect the establishment of the merger if that will be the conclusion.
